It is used for fault-tolerant quantum computing. it uses Majorana zero modes(MZMs) which is used for topological quantum computing.

Majorana 1 Quantum Chip – Key Point- 1. Topological Qubits –  it uses Exotic particles[Majorana fermions] which are considered prime source for making error-resistant qubits.

2. Hardware Design – Microsoft used combination of semiconducting nanowires and superconducting materials to develop this chip.

3. Error Reduction Advantage –  it is capable of suppressing natural error  because topological qubits are more stable in comparison to Superconducting qubits.

4. Challenges & Controversy:- Microsoft faced controversy in discovery of Majorana in 2021. In return they had to withdraw flawed research paper.

5. Future Integration –  It's a goal of Microsoft to integrate topological qubits on Azure Quantum platform to make scalable and more practical quantum computer.

IF Majorana 1 chip becomes successful then it will be an evolution in quantum error correction and fault-tolerant quantum computing.
